Yes, we have a Jewish radio station that intends broadcasting on Shabbat and Yom Tov and you are proud to be part of it.

Thanks for bringing that up David, in fact, the station made a decision NOT to put any Jewish broadcasting on Shabbos and Yom Tov and I'm very proud of that! LionFM 96.1 will offer Jewish programming 24/6

Will the radio station broadcast at all on Shabbat and Yom Tov or just refrain from Jewish content on these days?

The station cannot completely shut down on Shabbos and Yom Tov, this is not Eretz Yisroel, but a non-Jewish country. There will be no Jewish programming on those days. What more do you want? What would you suggest we do? Not have a Jewish station at all? It is a big kiddush Hashem that LionFm 96.1 will let all of Melbourne know that we do not allow any Jewish content on Shabbos and Yom Tov.

So who will be operating it on Shabbos and YT? A Shabbos goy?
Have the rabbis approved?

There has been some previous discussion about this here:

A reliable source informed me that the Rabbonim have indeed been consulted and that everything is halachically correct.

Shoshana - you may like to ask your reliable source who these Rabbonim are, and let us know.
Secondly, a radio station - a Kiddush Hashem?
A Kiddush Hashem is, for example , those people who lost their jobs because they would not work on Shabbos or Yom Tov. A Kiddush Hashem because they let the world know that we have a day of rest, and that we have holidays that are sacrosanct.
Once again , looking forward to the names of these Rabbonim from your reliable source.

The station is not Jewish owned, so there is no halachic problem if it is still open on Shabbos and Yom Tov. LionFm is all volunteers and none of us will be working there on Shabbos and Yom Tov. And it is a Kiddush Hashem when LionFm makes it known that there will be no Jewish people working there or any Jewish programming on those days as its policy.

The radio may not be Jewish owned, but it is run by Jews, and is to be known as "..... Jewish radio station here in Melbourne, Australia...." (your words).
As Jews we have Shabbat, and it is not in the spirit of Shabbat to have a Jewish radio station broadcasting - regardless of who does and who does not work there andthe content of the broadcaston Shabbat.
Those who are Shomrei Torah and Mitzvot should see it as such and give no support to the station, its sponsors, or advertisers.

I am not a halachik authority. I rely on Rabbonim. I suggest if this bothers you then you ask your local Rabbi as I have. I will not name the Rav because then we get into the game of ,'my Rabbi's is better than your Rabbi'. As in all situations, when you have a halachik issue, you go to your own Rav that you trust. And then you also have the choice of not listening to the station.

Why is it that some people are such haters? Are they so insecure and do they lead such sad lives that they cannot abide by others being part of positive initiatives?

Shoshana, you should be praised for being part of this new radio station. Hopefully you will bring a taste of authentic Judaism to many of our sisters and brothers in radio world.

Thanks for your support, that is what I intend to accomplish, with G-d's help, depsite the naysayers.

Is there a way to hear your show on-line for those of us who live outside of Australia? Perhaps record it and replay as a podcast from your blog?

The Repenting Jewess said...

My understanding is that there will be podcasts uploaded onto our website. I am not a technical person, but I assume you will be able to listen to it outside Australia. All will become clearer with time. This is a community station and it is all volunteer and it has taken two years and heaps of work to get it started., and it is still very much a work in progress.

Ari, who tells you what is "in the spirit of Shabbat" if not the Shulchan Aruch? Are you aware that not only is there no mitzvah to have our inanimate possessions rest on Shabbos, but that it is a serious issur to be "machmir" on this? If you shut off a machine for Shabbos, not to save electricity or because having it on will disturb your Shabbos, but because you don't want to rely on the "kulah" of אי אתה מצווה על שביתת כלים, then you are in the situation described in mishnah Brachos 1:3, ch"v.

Lion FM has in its constitution:

4. To encourage and assist the development of Jewish social, religious and cultural life in Victoria;

38 Broadcasting
38.1 The Association shall broadcast programmes at such times and with such frequency as the Committee may determine from time to time but in no event shall it broadcast on:
38.1.1 Shabbat;
38.1.2 Rosh Hashana;
38.1.3 Yom Kippur
unless it shall be on such terms and conditions as shall be determined by a Rabbi nominated by the Council of Orthodox Synagogues Victoria (“COSV”)

Lion FM could be taken off air by the Media Authority (ACMA) if it failed to obey its constitution - so halacha here is actually re-inforced by the State.

As a further point of information, the transmitter is run (only) by a pre-loaded computer during Shabbat.

How many Jewish websites are there and they still operate on shabbat ??? i can still browse and log into these websites during the shabbat ! Do they take it "off air" during the shabbat ? I don't think so, it's just not being updated. I love Lion FM, it's 24/6 and i'm proud of it. I keep the Shabbat. We don't have to make a big deal of it. and have a shabbat shalom !
